Stay well this Winter

Group of women in community centre after taking part in boxercise class

Winter can be a real challenge for staying motivated and active. The shorter days and colder temperatures often tempt us to hibernate indoors, leaving us feeling sluggish and down. But if you can get out, be a bit social and do some exercise you will feel SO much better.

I know first hand and how difficult it can be. In December I committed myself to run 5k every single day. It was challenging especially when life got in the way, and I could not do a full run, meaning I had the extra challenge of catching up on those missed kilometres. But the sense of achievement at the end was immense and I do feel proud. I enjoyed the challenge so much that I have committed to have a healthy focus every month in 2025.  And the best news is... you can join in too!

This January a team of us signed up to the 100-day push-up challenge for CancerResearch UK.  It has been a fantastic way to stay active and contribute to something meaningful.

February’s challenge is going to be do a 5 minute meditation each day.  Let me know if you would like to join us and I will add you to the February challenge WhatsApp.

Here are a few tips to help you stay motivated and active this winter:

Discover What You Love

  • Home workouts for when you can’t get out.  There are countless free workout videos available online, from high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to yoga and dance.

Come Outside

  • Apparently, there’s no such thing as bad weather.. just bad clothing.   Get your layers on and be prepared.  If you are comfortable you will enjoy being outside so much more

  • Edinburgh is so beautiful.  Make a list of your favourite parks, forests, or coastal paths and places you want to discover

  • Find friend or family member to join you for walks, runs, or other outdoor activities. (I love this – this is a win-win situation!)

Get Cosy and Self Care

  • As well as being active allow yourself guilt free time to unwind and get cosy. Light a candle, put a face mask on and watch a film – or whatever helps you to relax

  • Eat nutritious food – lots of protein and vegetable with every meal.

  • Geta consistent sleep routine, regular bedtime, nice dark room, come off your devices earlier

MINDSET MATTERS

Beyond physical activity, mindfulness practices can significantly improve your overall well-being during the winter months. Techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, and spending time in nature can help reduce stress, improve mood, and increase resilience. Would you like to join our February meditation group?
